Can you fix a peeling clear coat without repainting the car?

3D Collision Center

One car problem that we see frequently at 3D Collision Center is a peeling clear coat.  This peeling is known as delamination and it is where the clear top coat of paint on a car starts to peel away from the layer of paint below it.  In some cases delamination starts off minor, but it can turn pretty ugly in a short period of time if it's not corrected.

Are you the unfortunate owner of a car with a peeling clear coat?

The good news is that a peeling clear coat can be repaired without having to repaint the entire car, depending on these factors:

  • The extent of the delamination.  If the area of damage is all over your car, it would be more cost-effective and efficient to repaint the entire vehicle.

  • The depth of the peeling.  A car is usually painted first with primer, then paint, and then a top clear coat.  If the peeling dips into the paint or primer, your car will need new coats of paint.

  • The likeliness of future peeling.  In some cases, delamination is the result of a faulty paint job in the first place when the car was built, due to the coats of paint not being compatible.  This is more common in the early-to-mid nineties vehicles we've seen, but not as much of an issue today.  If it looks like your car’s clear coat will continue to peel away in other areas, it would be better to repaint the entire vehicle.

Are you looking for a DIY method for repairing a peeling clear coat?

If the peeling is only in one very small area, you can attempt to apply the methods explained by Popular Mechanics on how to remove a scratch by sanding.  The important thing to remember is that you’ll need to use very fine sandpaper and sand from the good area inwards, rather from the peeling part outwards.  Because this can be very tricky for anyone who isn’t experienced with clear coat repair, we recommend bringing your car to a professional.  It could save you a lot of time and money in the long run.

For quality on time every time, give 3D Collision Center a call.
